‘The Importance Of LinkedIn’ with Simon Hair

There are many ways to find your next role. Direct applications, meet-ups, networking events, recruitment agencies, and, for those so inclined, the good old newspaper.

But there is a tool that you should keep in your arsenal that is super effective and only requires 5 minutes of your time each day.

LinkedIn.

I know it seems obvious. LinkedIn has long been a platform used to identify employment opportunities. But have you really given it a good nudge? I mean outside of applying for jobs through it?

You should start. The effect it can have on your chances of securing your dream role are immeasurable.

So, what should you be doing? Well, you can check out this week’s episode of The Close to hear myself and Simon Hair talk about the benefits of utilising LinkedIn effectively, or, if you prefer you can check out some tips below.

Sort that profile picture out

Whilst people like to have a bit of fun on LinkedIn, it isn’t Facebook. That picture of you sipping a piña colada in Barbados is a lovely photo, but it might not quite give off the right impression. Generally speaking, a headshot showing your authentic self simply smiling is a winner. Keep it simple, keep the background noise free. It doesn’t need to be a professional shot.

Get your banner right

Create a banner that reflects what you do and who you are. It’s a great visual for prospective employers and other people you want to connect with. Adding your name, your title and even a phone number can work wonders. Canva is a great place to create your banner and it’s free.

Check out mine here as an example.

The 20/10/5 rule

You want to ensure that you are visible on LinkedIn. I regularly see the same people commenting and liking relevant content and they’re always front of mind when a role comes up. The 20/10/5 rule is a great starting point.

  • Connect with 20 people
  • Like 10 posts
  • Comment on 5 posts

This doesn’t take long but increases your visibility significantly. Just remember to be authentic and stay away from content that is likely to negatively trigger your audience. Stay away from politics and religion.
