I am very excited to be announcing the details for the first ever HCL- Cricket Australia DataJam, with our largest number of entrants for a DataJam it is sure to be an incredible day! Here is what you can expect at the HCL- CA DataJam 20:
WHAT IS THE HCL-CA DATAJAM?
This is a type of hackathon focused on sporting specific data sets. The outcome produces visualisations, analytics and insights in order to help the Australian Cricket team hopefully win the 2020 T20 world cup. A DataJam is a technically orientated event where people solve problems using data sets
So simply put it is a hackathon with data. In our eye’s hackathons were created for hacking and web development so we thought we would create a new name for the data world, hence DataJam. A group of analysts and statisticians coming together to create actionable insights from a data set.
This year we are very excited to welcome to the fold Cricket Australia’s Official Digital Technology Partner HCL Technologies. HCL Technologies partnered with Cricket Australia in 2019, bringing its two decades of experience and expertise in expanding and engaging ecosystems to empower CA to inspire love for the game across it’s ecosystem of fans, participants, enablers and elite teams and players.
HCL is an esteemed part of the panel of the judges for this DataJam and will team up with Cricket Australia and Precision to leverage the power of data and derive implementable insights for Cricket, benefiting every aspect of the game. We are also grateful to Fair Play who are the provider of the technology on which Cricket Australia capture match data.
COMPETING TEAMS
As you could imagine the interest was huge for this event with the global appeal of Cricket. We had the most teams reach out to enter of any DataJam and this has meant we are more confident than ever that the results will be amazing! Because of the interest, this year we have a semi-final taking place before the event leading to 8 teams competing on the day. We’ve had the usual suspects from the likes of CBA, Accenture, Quantium, KPMG, SAS, UNSW, Servian, The Data School, EdgeRed and facebook competing against new players like Performa, Eliiza, Greenstone Financial, Amobee, Woolworths, Macquarie, Aginic and Deloitte.
JUDGING PANEL
Well, we are proud to have some amazing current players (think as big as you can get), coaches and minds for Cricket Australia as part of the panel alongside technical specialists from the world of data. Thomas Body and Brian McFadyen are the brains behind the operation from Cricket Australia’s side. They will be making sure the technical work is robust! The finalised judging panel will be announced in the next few weeks.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS FOR CRICKET AUSTRALIA?
The benefits are numerous but the key thing being that CA have 100 of the strongest analytical minds in Australia working on their data. They will be looking to gather insights from the data provided which will involve ball by ball T20 data. CA will then be able to take this information back to the team, hopefully benefiting them in improving every aspect of their play.
HOW CAN YOU ATTEND/FOLLOW THE DATAJAM?
The event is closed to team entries but if you are in the world of data and would see this as something you are keen to get along to please get in touch with joel@precisionsourcing.foundrydigital.com.au, we can’t accommodate everyone at the amazing facebook offices in Barangaroo but we will do our best! WHAT OTHER EVENTS DO PRECISION SOURCING HOST?
In the past 5 years, we have launched successfully ‘Women In Data’, the ‘SAP Knowledge Share Group’, and Change Leadership Group as well as Australia’s very first ever sporting DataJam’s in partnership with NSW Rugby League and on a larger scale, the NRL.
