SAP Operations Lead

About the Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced SAP Technical Manager to lead the end-to-end technical operations, stability, and continuous improvement of our SAP environment. This is a critical leadership role responsible for ensuring our SAP systems are reliable, secure, scalable, and aligned with business strategy.

As the SAP Technical Manager, you will provide strong technical leadership across both IT and business stakeholders, driving operational excellence and delivering high-quality SAP services that support financial integrity and enterprise performance.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

  • Oversee SAP application support across core modules, ensuring optimal performance, configuration, and integration.
  • Govern SAP Basis administration, including upgrades, patching, transport management, system monitoring, and landscape management.
  • Lead high-quality Incident, Problem, and Change Management processes, driving rapid resolution of system issues.
  • Influence SAP architecture decisions and future project direction through strong technical and operational expertise.
  • Manage vendor relationships for SAP support, upgrades, and specialist services.

Team & Operational Leadership

  • Lead and develop a team of SAP Technical Specialists and Basis professionals, building deep capability and resilience.
  • Establish clear operational standards, documentation, and support models.
  • Foster strong collaboration across Applications, Infrastructure, Cyber Security, and business teams.
  • Champion a culture of operational discipline, proactive problem-solving, and service ownership.

Strategic & Commercial

  • Ensure high system availability, reliability, and performance in line with business expectations and SLAs.
  • Translate business requirements into operational roadmaps for system stability, upgrades, and capability improvements.
  • Manage the SAP operational budget, including licensing, support contracts, and external resources, while identifying cost optimisation opportunities.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives across service delivery, automation, and legacy system rationalisation.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Tertiary qualification in IT, Computer Science, or a related discipline (or equivalent demonstrated experience).
  • ITIL Foundation certification (or equivalent operational service management experience).
  • Significant technical leadership experience (10+ years in SAP) with a strong background in SAP Basis and operational service delivery.
  • Proven expertise managing SAP landscapes, including upgrades, patching, performance tuning, and environment management.
  • Demonstrated success leading small technical teams and managing complex stakeholder environments.
  • Strong commercial acumen with experience managing budgets, vendors, and service contracts.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to translate technical concepts for senior business stakeholders.

Highly Regarded

  • Experience in utilities, asset-intensive, or regulated industries.
  • Hands-on experience with SAP S/4HANA operations.
  • Cloud hosting knowledge (particularly Microsoft Azure).
